Multiple Teams · Velma (Jordan) Thompson Inducted Into 10th Region Hall of Fame

Paris, KY – Velma (Jordan) Thompson (1977-1981), who was a vital part of arguably the best team ever at GRC, was inducted into the 10th Region Girls Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday.  In her acceptance speech, an obviously very gracious Mrs. Thompson told the crowd that she would not have had the career she had at GRC if it wasn’t for God, her family, teammates, and coaches.  She also had a message for this season’s All 10th Region team members that were also being honored at the banquet.  Velma emphasized that the young players should not concentrate so much on scoring and that ultimately defense and rebounding is what wins games.

Velma was a force in the middle and routinely dominated the paint for the 1980-81 squad that won a remarkable 38 games while only losing 4.  That team spent much of that season as the #1 ranked team in the state of Kentucky in the AP poll.  Velma helped GRC win the prestigious LIT Tournament championship in the 1980-81 season.  Velma’s 1980-81 team also won the 1981 10th Region championship making it to the Sweet 16 final four eventually losing to Marshall County in the semi-finals.  That Lady Cardinal team beat Pulaski County, the 1981 state champion, twice that season.  Velma averaged 10.0 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in GRC’s 3 games in that 1981 Sweet 16 state tournament.  Because of her performance, Velma was voted to the All Sweet 16 State Tournament team in 1981.  She was also selected to a Kentucky all-state team for her play during the 1980-81 season having been voted to the 1981 UPI All State 2nd team.  Velma also represented Kentucky in the 1981 Kentucky-Indiana All Star series.  Velma finished her career at GRC with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and went on to play college basketball at Eastern Kentucky University.
