Multiple Teams · Freshmen Cards Storm Lexington Catholic On Davis’ Walk-off, 4-3

There were tornado watches out on Wednesday night; however, Cardinal Field was a pocket of safety until the line of storms passed Lexington. The Knights of Lexington Catholic led after the fifth inning, 3-0. The game was supposed to last 7 innings; however, the coaches and umpires agreed that the sixth inning was the final inning due to the storms’ expected arrival.

The Knights had scored all 3 of their runs in the second inning due to hitting 2 doubles and 2 singles. However, the Cardinals had only 4 hits for the first 5 innings combined heading into the bottom of the sixth, and final, inning. The Cardinals needed the winds of change to carry them into the sixth inning.

Jake Sponcil led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk. Sponcil moved to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Brandon Dyer, singled to left – scoring Sponcil. Dyer later stole second base. Joe Austin had a terrific at-bat. He drew a walk after having an 0-2 count. With runners at first and second, Hunter Heath sacrificed the runners to second and third. With one out and the tying run on second base, Tanner Walton hit a hard groundball up the middle; however, the shortstop made the play at first – scoring Dyer. With two outs and the tying run at third base, Chance Scobee hit a ground ball to third base. The Knights’ error scored Dyer and tied the game at 3. The next batter, Jaxson Davis, patiently waited for his pitch. With an 0-2 count, Davis blasted it to deep left-center. Scobee raced around the bases as the outfielders were unable to retrieve the ball before he crossed the plate. Davis’ walk-off triple won the game for the Cards, 4-3.
