Following the loss at Paris on Thursday, the Varsity Cardinals must have transformed into the mythological fire-bird known as the Phoenix. GRC was simply on fire by outscoring the Polar Bears, 37-6, in the first 13 minutes of the second half in The Igloo at Bracken County last night. Chase Taylor was 4 points shy of a triple-double as he had 10 rebounds and 13 assists on the night. Ryan Cooper led the scoring charge for the Cardinals with 28 points – on 7 treys.
Both teams kept within 3 points of each other during the first quarter. JJ Johnson scored first for the Cardinals on a drive with 6:50 remaining. Ryan Cooper had a big “and one” with 3:02 remaining to tie the score at 12. Cooper led the Cardinals with 6 points in the quarter. Bracken County led after the first quarter, 18-17.
The Polar Bears drained a trey with 2:10 remaining in the second quarter to tie the game at 32. In the final minute of the half, Ben Jackson scored on a putback and Ryan Cooper hit a trey to give the Cards a 5-point lead at halftime, 37-32. Cooper led the Cardinals with 8 points in the second quarter.
The Cards scored 7 unanswered points to open the third quarter behind two Jordan Graham buckets and another Ryan Cooper trey. Bracken County called a timeout to regroup; however, the Cardinals continued the attack by ending the third quarter on a run of 13-4. GRC led after the third quarter, 57-36. Cooper had 9 points and Graham had 6 points in the quarter.
Bracken County scored the first 2 points of the fourth quarter with 7:45 remaining; however, the Cards then scored 17 unanswered points in just under 5 minutes of play to put the game completely out of reach. GRC won the game, 82-47. Tydarius Clark and Will Philpot had 6 points each in the final stanza.
