Multiple Teams · Huge First Quarter Propels Cardinals Over Bath County, 80-48


The Cardinals scored 29 points in the first quarter last night at Letcher Norton Gym to defeat Bath County, 80-48. The Cardinals hit 3 treys in the first 1:30 of the game and made 10 more throughout the game for a total of 13 treys in the contest. The Cards led 22-3 following JJ Johnson’s bucket with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter. GRC led by 19 at the end of the first quarter, 29-10. Ryan Cooper had 13 points in the first quarter. Jehdon Jenkins scored 6 points off of the bench.

Bath County made a run of 14-4 in the first 5 minutes of the second quarter. The Cardinals steadied themselves and went on a run of 9-2 to end the first half. Chase Taylor led the Cards’ charge with 9 points in the quarter. GRC led at halftime, 42-26.

The Cards scored 10 unanswered points to open the second half. It was déjà vu as Ryan Cooper drained another trey to open the half – just as he had done to open the game. The Wildcats made a little run to end the quarter by outscoring the Cards, 13-7. GRC led after three quarters, 59-39. PJ Williams had 6 points in the quarter. Ryan Cooper had 5 points.

Ben Jackson’s “and one” with 6:26 remaining in the fourth quarter extended the Cards’ lead to 67-42. The Cardinals won the fourth quarter, 21-9. KJ Rucker’s trey ended the contest at 80-48. Ben Jackson led the Cards in the fourth quarter with 7 points.
