Winchester, KY – In a battle of the top 2 ranked teams in the 10th Region, the fans in attendance witnessed a great game that resembled a region championship game. Mason County (15-4) maintained a small lead throughout the 1st half thanks to 3-point buzzer beaters at the end of each of the first 2 quarters. A.J. Reed’s banked-in, half-court shot and Maddie Boone’s jumper from the wing accounted for the halftime margin of 6 points as GRC entered the locker room down 32-26.
GRC (17-3) used a stingy defensive effort in the 3rd quarter to outscore the Lady Royals 15-8 and take a 41-40 lead going into the final quarter. Mason County made free throws down the stretch and GRC missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer from just inside half court to lose for only the 3rd time this season, 54-51.
Hayley Harrison led the Lady Cards on the offensive side with 13 points. Right behind her was Shamaya Behanan with 12 points. Also contributing to the scoring column were Maleaha Bell (8), Elizabeth Hardiman (6), Kylee Murray (5), Kennedy Igo (4), and Jasmine Flowers (3). Aliyah Gray also saw action.
GRC shot 20-47 (42.6%) from the field including 5-13 (38.5%) from the 3-point line. The Lady Cards did not miss from the free throw line going 6-6.
Hardiman pulled down 9 rebounds to lead GRC on the boards. Flowers dished out a team high 4 assists while 4 players had 1 steal each. Behanan and Hardiman had 1 blocked shot each.
GRC goes on the road this Friday travelling to Mt. Sterling for their second 40th District matchup with the Montgomery County Lady Indians. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm as part of a girls-boys doubleheader.
